Acoustic Treatment for the UAE Majlis: A Beginner's Guide

Hard surfaces, ornate ceilings, large gatherings — the majlis is one of the most acoustically demanding rooms in any home. Here is what to do about it without ruining the look.

The majlis is built for hospitality first, sound second. Polished marble or stone floors. Tall plaster or gypsum ceilings, often coved or domed. Glass walls or large windows for the view. Heavy upholstered seating around three walls and an open fourth. When the room is empty, the acoustics are a disaster — every clap, every footstep, every word bounces three or four times before dying. When it fills with 40 to 80 guests, conversation becomes shouting because everyone is trying to be heard over their own reflections.

This is the majlis paradox: a room designed to host conversation that fights conversation by its own geometry. And it gets worse the moment you add a sound system. Speakers in an untreated majlis are not heard — they are reflected, smeared, and made tiring.

Acoustic treatment fixes this. Not by silencing the room, but by controlling which sounds reflect and which absorb, so dialogue is clear, music is enveloping, and the room stays quiet enough to talk in.

What "treatment" actually means

Treatment is not soundproofing. Soundproofing stops sound going in or out of a room. Treatment shapes the sound inside the room. They use different materials and solve different problems.

There are four pillars of treatment:

  1. Absorption — soft materials that convert sound energy to heat. Bass traps, panels, heavy curtains, deep upholstery.
  2. Diffusion — surfaces that scatter sound rather than reflect it cleanly. Bookcases, decorative wooden panels, articulated wall art.
  3. Bass trapping — specifically tuned absorbers placed at room corners and pressure points, because low frequencies behave very differently from mid and high frequencies.
  4. Reflection management — strategic placement of hard and soft surfaces so first reflections from speakers do not reach the listener’s ears within 15ms of the direct sound.

A treated majlis usually needs all four. Most majlis installs we audit have none of them.

The four problems unique to a majlis

Hard floor. Marble and stone reflect 95% of mid and high frequencies. The single biggest improvement most majlis spaces can make is a large, heavy rug — at least 4m by 3m, ideally hand-knotted wool. This is also where Persian and Oriental rugs become an acoustic asset, not just decoration.

High plaster ceiling. A flat plaster or gypsum ceiling acts like a giant mirror for sound. If the architecture allows, decorative wooden beams, recessed coffered sections, or tensioned acoustic fabric panels above the seating area dramatically improve clarity. None of these need to look like "studio treatment" — they read as architecture.

Glass walls and large windows. Glass is acoustically transparent at low frequencies and highly reflective at high frequencies. Heavy curtains help, but the most effective fix is acoustic film on the glass or motorised acoustic panels that descend when the room is in use.

Open fourth wall. The classic majlis layout puts seating around three walls with an open archway or wide entrance on the fourth. Sound escapes freely through this opening, dragging clarity with it. A motorised partition or simply a heavy curtain across the opening during use reclaims that energy.

Where to put what (practical placement)

For a typical 8m × 6m majlis with a 4m ceiling and 30 seats:

  • Floor: one large rug (at least 4m × 3m) covering the central seating area. Wool over synthetic.
  • Ceiling: 4 to 6 cloud-style absorbers above the seating area, ideally hidden behind a decorative wooden lattice or coffered section.
  • Corners: 2 floor-to-ceiling bass traps in opposite corners, behind decorative urns or planters.
  • Walls: 6 to 8 fabric-wrapped absorber panels behind the seating, sized to match the architecture. These can be commissioned in any fabric and look like art panels.
  • Glass: heavy lined curtains drawn during evening use.

The result: speech intelligibility doubles, the system can play 3 dB lower for the same perceived loudness, and the room stops being tiring after an hour.

Treatment before vs after construction

The cheapest acoustic treatment is the one designed in before the drywall and plaster go up. We can specify ceiling cavities, wall stud spacing, in-wall absorber pockets, and floor underlayment that does most of the work before any visible material is installed.

The most expensive acoustic treatment is the one retrofitted into a finished majlis. It works, but every panel becomes a visible decision instead of an architectural detail.
