Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Anniversary Edition — What's New, What Sounds Different
Fifty years of the 800 Series, refined across every model. Here is what actually changed, what stayed the same, and what it sounds like.
Bowers & Wilkins celebrates the 50th anniversary of the 800 Series with a refined edition of every model in the line. For UAE buyers, this is the most important loudspeaker release of the year. The 800 Series has, for five decades, been the reference standard against which serious home loudspeakers are measured. The Anniversary Edition is not a redesign — it is a refinement of the most successful loudspeaker lineage in audio history.
Here is what is actually different, what is the same, and what it sounds like.
The lineage matters
Three things define the 800 Series DNA:
- The Diamond tweeter — a 25mm dome made from chemical-vapour-deposited diamond, the stiffest practical material for a tweeter. First introduced on the original Nautilus 801.
- The Continuum mid-range — a woven composite cone that replaced Kevlar in 2015, producing more even break-up behaviour and dramatically lower colouration in the critical mid-range.
- The Aerofoil bass driver — a varying-thickness composite cone, stiff at the centre and progressively lighter toward the surround, that combines piston-like behaviour with low cone mass.
Together these three drivers, paired with B&W’s evolving cabinet construction and crossover design, define what a "natural" loudspeaker sounds like for most of the high-end industry.
What the Anniversary actually changes
The Anniversary Edition refinements are subtle but real:
- Crossover components upgraded — Mundorf EVO Silver-Gold-Oil capacitors throughout, hand-selected resistor tolerances, point-to-point wiring on the most critical paths.
- Bypass network revised — improves transient response and reduces phase distortion at crossover frequencies.
- Tweeter housing decoupling — new isolation between the Diamond tweeter and the cabinet reduces structural resonance.
- Cabinet bracing reinforced — heavier internal bracing on the 802 D4, 803 D4, and 800 D4 cabinets specifically.
- Three new finishes — Anniversary Walnut, Anniversary Piano Gloss Black, Anniversary Satin White. Available only on the Anniversary edition.
What is not changed: the basic driver designs, the dimensions, the crossover topology. This is a refinement of execution, not a rethink of design.
The range, model by model
800 D4 Anniversary — Reference floor-stander. Triple 10-inch Aerofoil bass drivers, Continuum mid-range in the iconic Turbine Head, Diamond tweeter on top. For dedicated music rooms 40m²+. AED 145,000/pair.
802 D4 Anniversary — Less massive than the 800 but with the same Turbine Head mid-range housing. For rooms 30-50m². AED 105,000/pair.
803 D4 Anniversary — Three-way floor-stander with separate Turbine mid-range. The classic large-villa choice. AED 78,000/pair.
804 D4 Anniversary — Three-way floor-stander with integrated mid-range cabinet. Best balance of performance and visual scale for most UAE villas. AED 52,000/pair.
805 D4 Anniversary — Diamond-tweeter bookshelf. The benchmark stand-mount in audio. AED 45,000/pair (stands extra).
HTM81 D4 / HTM82 D4 Anniversary — Centre channels matched to 802/800 and 803/804 respectively. Essential if building a cinema with 800 Series fronts.
What does it sound like
Three things stand out in our showroom audition versus the previous (non-Anniversary) D4 series:
- Tighter transient leading edges. Drum strikes, piano hammer attacks, plucked strings — the moment of attack is more clearly defined. This is the bypass network change at work.
- Greater holographic depth. Soundstage depth was always a 800 Series strength; the Anniversary pushes it further. Orchestral recordings feel three-dimensional rather than wide.
- Cleaner low-level detail. At lower volumes the resolution of fine details — breath sounds, room acoustics on recordings, micro-dynamic shading — improves audibly.
The macrodynamic capability and tonal balance are the same as the previous D4. If you own a previous D4 system, the Anniversary is an upgrade, not a transformation. If you are buying new, this is the right time to buy.
What Cinefolks recommends
For a UAE villa cinema or major hi-fi room, our default front-three recommendation has been an 802 D4 + HTM81 D4 + 802 D4 configuration. The Anniversary upgrades this baseline meaningfully without changing the integration story.
For a dedicated hi-fi room without cinema duties, 800 D4 Anniversary pairs with appropriate amplification (Burmester, Naim, T+A) represent one of the finest two-channel systems money can buy.
